György Selmeczi: Sting Quartets
The first quartet was composed at the end of the 1980s as homework for an IRCAM scholarship, and later it became clear that Selmeczi’s string quartets proved to be the cornerstones of his œuvre, separating creative eras, marking and tracing stylistic changes. "My quartets are my most personal music, my most cherished treasures," says the composer. Among his inspirational sources, we can find his experiences connected to the bourgeois chamber music, and the specific world of authentic folk fiddling as well, beside the unavoidable world of Bartók's quartets. In addition, in his 4th string quartet, the composer makes ample use of his film- and incidental music experience, demonstratively using homophonic solutions with a kind of defiant self-assertion.
