György Selmeczi: Five Latin hymns for soprano solo and string quintet
The 2023 composition is another remarkable piece in the composer's rich oeuvre of sacred music. The texts are drawn from the five most important hymns in the Catholic hymnal, their musical adaption is not related to Gregorian chant sources. The solo voice is accompanied by a string quintet, but according to the composer's notes, it can also be performed with a string orchestra or piano accompaniment – a piano reduction of the score is also available.
O sanctissima
This hymn, originally written to the melody of a traditional Sicilian sea-shanty, is most often heard on Marian feast days.
Tantum ergo Sacramentum
Verses 5 and 6 of St. Thomas Aquinas's hymn for the Feast of Corpus Christi (Pange lingua), which are sung during the procession, blessing, and litany of the Blessed Sacrament.
Salve Regina
One of the oldest Marian antiphons, in which the faithful implore the mercy of the Virgin Mary, especially after pilgrimages and Holy Masses. Its author is believed to be the Benedictine monk Hermannus Contractus.
O salutaris Hostia
The last two verses of St. Thomas Aquinas's Corpus Christi hymn Verbum supernum. Today, it is most often sung during the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
Ave verum Corpus
The 14th-century verse antiphon is traditionally attributed to Pope Innocent VI. It is sung during adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, after Communion and after the Elevation.
