Selmeczi György: „Choir Songs”
The quotation marks in the title already indicate that this is a parody, a humorous musical adaptation of well-known and lesser-known texts. The author explains his intention: "The choral works presented here are intended to serve the cheerfulness and good humour of those participating in collective singing. Playing with genres, styles, and different layers of humour, in Hungarian, almost untranslatable, in a sort of a ‘comedian manner’. These are cheerful pieces. Perhaps the audience will find them amusing as well?!” (György Selmeczi)
The volume contains four choral works for mixed choir a cappella, except for the last one, "Szép város, Kolozsvár" (My beautiful city, Cluj), in which the vocal parts are accompanied by piano. The latter is a paraphrase of Imre Kálmán's famous operetta song, practically a series of character variations, with subtitles such as Mendelssohnlike, Revolutionary..., Kurtágiana, Dolmányos (Recruitment song), Couplet (alla habanera), Farewell Swing...
